What’s Next for the Carolina Panthers

It has become all too common that after the playoffs are out of reach, the Carolina Panthers finally start to play well. In this 2012-2013 NFL season, they had no intention of breaking that trend. Seven of their nine losses have been by a margin of 5 points or less, many of which have been a collapse in the closing minutes. Specifically looking at their losses to the Atlanta Falcons and the Chicago Bears, it was the defense that allowed the opposing teams to get back in the game. This is even more disconcerting since Carolina’s head coach, Ron Rivera,  was hired to improve the team’s defense since that was his calling card.

That being said, the “resurgence” of the Carolina Panthers can be greatly attributed to Cam Newton’s play. Even though they are 2-2 in the past four weeks, he has shown glimpses of the brilliance that earned him rookie of the year honors last year. In the past four weeks he has a total of 1,077 passing yards, 286 rushing yards, 8 passing touchdowns as well as 3 more rushing. The most important statistic in that span of time is the number of interceptions he’s thrown, zero. Newton’s turnovers have been the Panthers’ Achilles Heel since the start of his career, but you might be surprised how similar this season has been to 2011 so far.

2011 statistics through week 14:

  • 270/452 (59.7%), 3,573 passing yards, 15 TD, 16 INT
  • 107 rushing attempts, 554 yards, 13 TD

2012 statistics through week 14:

  • 227/390 (58.2%), 3,220 passing yards, 16 TD, 10 INT
  • 104 rushing attempts, 640 yards, 7 TD

The number that jumps out the most is the amount of rushing touchdowns, considerably less than the quarterback record Newton set in 2011. What makes this even more curious is the comparison of Newton’s rushing statistics to the Carolina backs. DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart, and Mike Tolbert have a combined total of 243 carries, 841 yards, and 6 TD. These numbers are particularly troubling since the organization has invested so much money in these players’ salaries going forward. Newton’s effectiveness through the air this season has been superb given the lack of production in the Carolina running game. Losing Ryan Kalil greatly impacted all phases of the offense, but there are certain parties that have to be held accountable.

The Carolina Panthers were 4-9  through week fourteen in 2011, the same as this season. The  lack of explosion in the offense has caused the Panthers to rely much more on their defense than they had hoped to going into this year. However, given the offense’s lack of production and the close margins of each game, the defense has slightly improved. The only thing in this league that matters is winning, and the Panthers have simply been unable to finish games.

This team faces a challenging last three weeks, they visit San Diego, host the Oakland Raiders, then travel to New Orleans for their season finale. Since  this team could easily be at 8-9 right now and in the wild card hunt, I personally think that Carolina can win all three.  I am not sure that matching last year’s record by winning two more games will secure Rivera’s job for next season, and frankly it shouldn’t. Jerry Richardson is known to be patient for results, just look at Jake Delhomme, John Fox, and Marty Hurney. All three over welcomed their stay, stunting the Panthers’ growth.

Since their current roster has proven that they can play at a high level, the future is now for the Carolina Panthers. With a  top five draft pick locked up in the 2013 draft, there’s no reason why their current momentum can’t propel them to bigger heights next season. The only thing that could hold the Panthers back might just be that certain someone on their sideline wearing sunglasses.

Panthers Shock Falcons

The Panthers showed a lot of drive in this game despite a lost season and really dominated a superior Falcons team.  They jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and extended it to 23-0 after a 72 yard TD run.  The Falcons didn’t score until 5 minutes left in the third quarter.  It isn’t shocking to see the offense do so well, but the Panthers defense shut down Atlanta for much of this contest.  I spoke about how I thought the Panthers would put this game on Newton’s shoulders, and that was completely the case.  He threw 35 times, completing 23 of them for nearly 300 yards.  He had two touchdown passes and ran another in as well.  He had 116 yards rushing as well which the majority of the 195 the Panthers had as a team.  It was a great performance from Newton who has had mostly and up and down season.

The defense bent, but didn’t break for most of the game.  It took a while for the Falcons to score, but they did end up putting 20 points up.  Playing off receivers later in the game, Matt Ryan was able to rack up 342 yards through the air with 2 scores.  He threw an interception as well.  The running game was basically non existent for the Falcons. Turner and Rodgers split 11 carries for only 35 yards.  of course falling to such an early deficit will force the ball into the quarterback’s hands.

This game won’t resurrect the season for Carolina, but will give them a bit of motivation going forward.  Cam Newton clearly has superstar potential, but the weapons around him will have to improve.  If you take away Steve Smith’s 100 yard game and the rest of the Panthers skill players were mediocre at best.  That is something that will have to be addressed in the offseason, but for now the Panthers should celebrate taking down the Falcons for their second loss of the season.

These two teams faced off in week 4 in an exciting contest.  Newton and the Panthers fell just short of topping Atlanta for their first loss of the year.  Of course, we know how things have shaped up for both teams since that game.  Atlanta has built off their early season success to sit at 11-1 in week 14.  Carolina, well, has not.  The Panthers hit maybe all time low for the season as they fell to the one win Chiefs.  KC may have had a little drive to win this game after losing a teammate, but Carolina is clearly out of at this point.  Their only motivation for this game may be to defeat a division rival, but that won’t change the landscape much for either team.  at 3-9, the Panthers may have already packed it in, looking for that high draft pick.

I don’t believe Cam Newton has quit yet, which is what this whole game is going to focus on.  With no running game to speak of recently except Newton, he has had to own games mostly with his arm.  With still no bonafide number 2 receiver, Newton has relied on Steve Smith a lot again this year.  They haven’t had the same magic this year as teams are now working on shutting down the veteran receiver.  Jonathan Stewart looks to be out again, so that means DeAngelo Williams is once again the starter.  Don’t expect a ton of carries though, as he hasn’t been a big part of this offense for some time now.

Carolina is now tied for the worst record in the NFC with Philadelphia.  This team doesn’t have a whole lot going for them after a promising year last year.  Some major changes could be made in the offseason, but for now there are still 4 more games to be played.

Carolina Losses to KC’

December 7, 2012 in Panthers Games

The Chiefs just simply wanted this game more.  After losing linebacker Jovan Belcher in a murder suicide earlier in the week, the Chiefs clearly wanted to win this game more than any other all year.  That helped a bad team defeat another bad team.  The Panthers could not stop Jamaal Charles, who shows flashes of being the best RB in the league at times.  Brady Quinn also played the best game possibly of his career.  The Panthers don’t have much of a secondary to speak of and Quinn surprisingly exploited it.  He finished 19 of 23 for 201 yards and 2 scores.  The Panthers defense really didn’t show up for this one.

Cam was able to throw for 3 scores, but completed just over half of his passes.  The running game was decent, but they didn’t use it enough.  Both Newton and Williams did well rushing the ball but it was Newton through the air the majority of the game.  Steve Smith had one of his better games of the season with 120 yards and score.

Overall, the Panthers fall to 3-9 with a matchup with Atlanta coming up.  The Falcons have just one loss all year and a second this Sunday seems unlikely.

Chiefs Playing with Heavy Hearts

December 2, 2012 in Panthers Game Previews

Tragic news came out of Kansas City yesterday morning when it was reported that starting Linebacker Jovan Belcher killed his girlfriend and himself.  Belcher apparently drove to the Chiefs practice facility after murdering his girlfriend and addressed Rome Crennell and Scott Pioli outside the doors of the practice facility.  He thanked them for the opportunity to play the game and then walked away and shot himself.  Very devastating news for an already low Chiefs team.  Very confusing news as well as at this point not much has been said in terms of a motive.

The game between the Chiefs and Panthers is still going to be played, however.  The Chiefs players will clearly be playing with a lot on their minds as one of their teammates will no longer be with them on the sidelines.  It is hard to predict how they will react to such news, but they might be playing with a little extra motivation for their fallen teammate.  Either way, it is a 1:00 PM kickoff at Arrowhead Stadium.

Panthers Look For Momentum

Carolina isn’t going to the playoffs this year, but they could end the season on a high note if they can pull together a few more wins.  Take away two big losses to the Giants and Broncos and their other 6 losses have been by a TD or less.  The Panthers have been in a lot of games this year but haven’t been able to shut the door.  Their last 5 games feature only one team with a record above .500.  Win 3 or 4 of these and the season looks a little less loss.  If that makes any sense…

Well this Sunday’s game should be a good step in the right direction.  Kansas City has lost their last 8 games.  They are a team in an even worse situation than Carolina with only 1 win on the season.  Their starting QB Matt Cassell has only 6 TDs on the season.  In the games Brady Quinn has replaced him he has yet to reach the end zone.  Carolina’s secondary is nothing special, but no matter who is under center for the Chiefs the defense should fare well.  What they do have to worry about is the rushing attack.  Jamaal Charles is an elite back that has lead the Chiefs to the fourth best rushing attack in the league.  He is capable of some serious games with breakaway speed rivaled by nobody.

The Chiefs defense hasn’t been horrible, but are capable of some decent performances.  They gave up just 17 points to Denver, 16 to Pittsburgh, and only 9 to Baltimore.  They have also given up more than 25 points on 7 separate occasions.  Odds are that Cam Newton will put up some points on the Chiefs, but he certainly can’t just shake them off.  They have struggled more against the run so it may be a chance to get DeAngelo Williams and Mike Tolbert some carries.  Jonathan Stewart is likely out with a high ankle sprain.   When it comes down to it, this is a game Carolina should win as long as they still have some motivation left.

Panthers Win on Monday Night

For one night at least, the Panthers were the better team on the field.  Starting rookie Nick Foles over Michael Vick who was without a concussion and Bryce Brown for his first start over LeSean McCoy who is also out with a concussion, the Eagles just didn’t have it.  It was Cam Newton though who stole the show like we all know he can.  The second year QB threw for 2 touchdowns and ran for another two.  He had 306 yards through the air, another 52 on the ground, and didn’t turn the ball over once.  It was a great night on what has been a lost season for a very talented player.  Searching for a number two receiver for a long time now, Brandon LaFell and Louis Murphy were his top two targets in this game. LaFell had 74 yards and a score and Murphy had 65 yards with 55 on one play.  Not earth shattering numbers, but a step in the right direction.

The defense was pretty solid against the Eagles ailing offense.  Nick Foles still has a lot to prove and he didn’t do much in this one.  He completed 16 of 21 but for just 119 yards.  The Eagles clearly didn’t want to put the game in the young quarterback’s hands.  Bryce Brown had a tremendous game though.  He had 178 yards on just 19 carries and got into the endzone twice in this one.  A very impressive performance for Brown in his first career start.

For the Panthers, they are now 3-8, so it isn’t like this will turn their season around.  At least they proved they can still win a game against a team they are better than.  They have a chance to do that again when they travel to Arrowhead to take on the one win Chiefs.

Panthers Set For Monday Night

The season may be lost, but Carolina has a chance to prove to the world that they are better than their record.  They actually have a good shot to that against a sputtering Eagles team.  Carolina didn’t have the expectations that Philly had, but are still have just one less win than the proclaimed “dream team.”  Ever since given that title after the 2011 offseason they have struggle mightily.  After missing the playoffs last year they have begun this season with a 3-7 record and almost certainly another seat on the couch come playoff time.  In fact, this game will face two coaches with hottest seats in November.  At this point, I would say it is unlikely either is on the sidelines for their respective teams come next year.

For the Eagles, neither Vick or McCoy are likely to play in the game.  Replacing Vick will be Nick Foles who is seemingly auditioning for a starting spot next year.  Mike Vick was exceptional in 2010, but turnovers have caught up with him enough to leave many fans clamoring for the rookie Foles to take his job permanently.  Foles didn’t help himself last week with an abysmal performance against a poor Washington secondary.  That is good news for Carolina, who also has a poor secondary.  The defense for Philly has already canned their coordinator Juan Castillo, but that has not improved their play as of late.  They have a lot of talent on that side of the ball, but it has not resulted in many wins this season.

In what looked like a promising game before the year, this Monday Nights game has turned into a real dull matchup for the national stage.  Still, Carolina will get to show off what talent they do have in this game and give their team a little confidence to finish out the year.

Panthers Lose a Tight One

Another loss and another step closer to a top 5 pick in next years draft.  With this most recent loss the Panthers fell to 2-8.  Once again, they played a close game but came up short in the end.  Carolina was in control much of this game, but in the end they could not stop the firepower of the Bucs offense.  Doug Martin played a remarkable game in what has become quite the season for the rookie runner.  Freeman had two interceptions but also three touchdowns, including one with just 12 seconds left to Vincent Jackson.  A two point conversion was followed, again to Jackson to force OT.  Receiving the ball first, TB didn’t even allow Carolina’s offense to see the field, sealing a drive with a 15 yard strike to Dallas Clark.  Freeman was kept in check all game, until the final drive in regulation and the only drive of OT.  He came alive down the stretch to leave Carolina fans leaving the stadium with little to cheer about.

This game is just another tough pill to swallow in what has been a lost season.  Ron Rivera’s seat continues to get hotter, and the auditions for next year and long underway.  Brandon LaFell played a good game in this one, which is very big for him.  Newton may be asking for more weapons next year, so it is LaFell’s best interest to start heating up to finish the year.  None of the RBs got hot in this game and once again it was a committee attack.  All that talk of a feature back taking over seems to have been thrown out the window.  Carolina has a showdown on Monday night to face the equally disappointing Eagles in prime time.

Panthers Take on Hot Buccaneers Team

Tampa has taken a completely different route this season then the Panthers.  Despite suffering a hand full of devastating injuries, including Adrian Clayborn, Carl Nicks, and Davin Joseph, they have kept it together to over .500 at this point in the season.  Now, at 5-4 they have plenty of games left to continue to prove they are for real.  For now though, they are one of the hottest teams in the NFL with 3 straight wins and 4 out of their last 5.  Doug Martin may be the hottest player in football right now, putting up record setting numbers each week.  He isn’t likely to be slowed down by the Panthers mediocre defense.  Still, he isn’t invulnerable.  He was limited on the ground last week, but made his damage on the receiving end.  It won’t be easy to stop him, but they do have some hope.

Josh Freeman is also having a nice bounceback season.  With top WR Vincent Jackson in the fold, he is showing some of that big play ability he showed back in 2010.  With Mike Williams flowing well again, the whole offense has been very impressive for over a month now.  That is a scary combination they have, which has led to some big points.

The defense, however, is a different story.  The have been burned through the air all year long, which could mean a big day for Cam Newton.  With Aqib Talib shipped off to New England, and Eric Wright nursing an Achilles injury, things are only getting worse.  The pass rush has been mostly non existent as well, leaving a lot of yards through the air.  The rush D has been pretty great, though, so Stewart may not have his best game.  It will be interesting to see if they go back to the rotation with Williams.  I think this would be a poor decision by Rivera as it will be difficult to get in any rhythm against a tough Tampa run D if you are constantly taken out of the game.

Either way, I think this is game Carolina losses.  They just don’t have the talent to keep up with Tampa, and the drive to win is much lower than a scorching team.  Carolina will play hard, but at the end the day I think the Tampa offense is too much.
