Who will fill Captain Munnerlyn’s role?

By Nick Brown

Let’s face it… Captain was a big part of our defense last year; he played outside and inside. For a guy who is 5’8 and 195 lbs, he was not afraid to stick his nose on the ball. His 2013 season stats look like this:

Tackles: Solo- 48, Assisted- 26; Sacks: 3.5; Fumbles: Forced- 1, Recovered- 1; Interceptions- 2 (Both returned for touchdowns)

I know there were some bad plays too… getting burned by Mike Wallace twice and even worse when he got burned by Anquan Boldin. Losing Captain leaves a void on our defense. Who is ready, and capable, of filling this diverse role? Let’s first look at the roster of players who will likely be there when the final 53 is set.

Bene Benwikere – 6’0 – 185 LB – Rookie
Antoine Cason – 6’1 – 195 LB – 7 year
James Dockery- 6’1 – 185LB – 4 year
Charles Godfrey – 5-11 – 210 LB – 7 year
Josh Norman – 6’0 – 195LB – 3 year
Josh Thomas – 5’11 – 185 – 4 year
Melvin White – 6’1 – 205 – 2 year

Personally, I think that the two starters will be White and Cason. They are both big and physical. To see what this new defense would look like, let’s examine the nickel package possibilities. We can slide Cason in to cover the slot wide receiver and have Godfrey come in to cover the outside receiver. I am also interested in what Benwikere will do throughout training camp and the preseason. I would be happy, and not at all surprised, if Benwikere took the nickel DB position. Let’s remember who the last rookie to have the nickel DB position… Captain Munnerlyn.
