Another tough loss for Carolina who for the second straight week came down to the wire against a good team in the NFC.  In the end, the Seahawks suffocating defense was too much, and a sack fumble ended the Panthers bid for their second win of the season.  It wasn’t the prettiest game for the Panthers offense, as the only TD scored was on a Captain Munnerlyn pick six.  Munneryln got the spot start for an injured Chris Gamble and made the most of it on that play.  The defense came up big with a safety with just 59 seconds left.  That is 9 points for the defense, while the offense managed only 3.

Cam Newton didn’t have one of his best contests, completing less than half his passes for a mere 141 yards through the air.  The running game was almost non-existent as well, which is puzzling considering the game was never out of hand.  Carolina plays best when they hit the ground running, but that wasn’t the case today.  Cam Newton had the best game on the ground, taking the ball 7 times for 42 yards.  Jonathan Stewart had only 4 carries and DeAngelo Williams only had 6.  Seattle has a great rush defense, but Carolina had nothing going through the air.

The Panthers defense was decent, but not spectacular.  They probably played one of their better games on Sunday, but it wasn’t enough.  Russell Wilson completed over 3/4 of his passes for 221 yards.  He had one TD to go along with 2 picks.  Marshawn Lynch played his typical work horse role, going for 85 yards on 25 carries.  Seattle really outplayed Carolina in most phases of the game, but kept it close.  The Seahawks offense isn’t great, so Carolina didn’t have to play outstanding to keep them off the board.

So that leaves the Panthers at 1-4 and now tied for last in the NFC South.  They are going into their bye week, so they will have some time to dwell on the loss.  I didn’t think they would be a playoff team, but they are taking big step backwards from last year.  They have played some close games, but they are gong to need to start finishing some with wins sooner than later.
